PM Modi Calls for Productive Winter Session of Parliament
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the media ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament, emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue and delivery rather than disruptive drama. He urged both ruling and opposition parties to prioritize national building over political battles.
Modi's Message to the Opposition
Modi encouraged the opposition to move past the results of recent elections and contribute meaningfully to parliamentary debates. He stated, "Come out of the setbacks of poll losses and raise strong points in the House debates." He acknowledged that while negativity might have a place in politics, a positive mindset is essential for nation-building. He also pointed out the record voter turnout in Bihar elections and increase is women’s share in the voting as signs of a healthy democracy.
Government's Stance on Key Issues
Despite Modi's call for cooperation, the Winter Session began with disruptions as the Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned shortly after commencement due to opposition protests. The opposition had previously demanded discussions on several issues, including:
- Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls
- Recent Red Fort blast
- Air pollution
- Developments related to the government’s foreign policy
The government, however, indicated that a discussion on SIR specifically would not be possible, as it is an administrative exercise handled by the Election Commission, an autonomous body for which the government cannot directly answer.
Opposition Demands and Government Response
During an all-party meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the opposition voiced their concerns and demands for discussions on various pressing issues. The government acknowledged these demands but maintained its position on the SIR issue.
Key takeaway: PM Modi is asking for a session focused on progress and collaboration, while the opposition aims to address critical issues and hold the government accountable.
