Opposition Slams Modi's "Drama" Accusations Before Parliament Session

Opposition parties, including the Congress, have strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent remarks accusing them of turning Parliament into a stage for "drama." The Congress party retorted by calling Modi the "biggest dramabaaz" and dismissing his accusations as hypocritical.

Modi's Comments Ahead of Winter Session

Speaking to reporters before the Winter session, Modi stated that Parliament should be a place for delivery, not drama. He accused the opposition of using the House as a "warm-up arena" for elections or as an outlet for frustration after defeats. He urged for constructive, result-driven debate and offered the opposition tips for positive politics.

Key quote from Modi: "We need to work with a sense of responsibility. Parliament is not a place for drama, it is a place for delivery."

Congress Responds: Accusations of Hypocrisy and Inaction

Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Jairam Ramesh responded sharply, accusing the government of trampling on parliamentary decorum for the past 11 years. Kharge stated that Modi's comments were a distraction from real issues like unemployment, inflation, and economic inequality.

Kharge criticized the hasty passage of bills during the Monsoon session, some with minimal discussion. He also pointed to the government's handling of the Manipur issue and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.

Other Congress Voices

  • Priyanka Gandhi Vadra argued that raising critical issues like SIR and Delhi's air pollution is not "drama."
  • Renuka Chowdhury called Modi a "master in drama" and compared ruling party leaders to Mahatma Gandhi's three monkeys.

TMC Joins the Criticism

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee also condemned Modi's remarks, asserting that demanding accountability on the SIR exercise and other governance issues is not theatrics. He said the opposition seeks a debate on SIR, citing alleged procedural lapses and related deaths.

Banerjee accused the Election Commission of an "unplanned and glitch-ridden" revision process, criticizing the lack of training and resources for BLOs. He also questioned the government's accountability on issues like demonetization and security lapses.

Banerjee's key point: "If raising people's voice is drama, then the people will give them a reply in the next election."
